Every season, including the new one, opens with a vignette depicting Jimmy’s new life as 'Gene': a Cinnabon manager in Omaha, Nebraska, living a solitary and miserable life as he attempts to escape justice for his role in Walter White’s criminal empire. At some point, Jimmy will formally adopt the name Saul Goodman, set up his one-man practice, and establish himself as the shadiest lawyer in Albuquerque, which leads to his life-destroying partnership with Walter White.īut even without the pretext of Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul has been priming us for an unhappy ending from the very beginning.

Of course, this is the path Better Call Saul has been taking us down from the beginning. If she cuts ties with Jimmy before the end of the series-as I suspect she will-it’s going to take something even worse than we’ve seen Jimmy do before. It’s already starting to feel like she’s just throwing good money after bad. But as Jimmy continues to spiral, it’s increasingly hard to imagine the hard-working, pragmatic Kim hitching herself to this sinking ship. Conveniently, Breaking Bad never even hinted at Saul Goodman’s personal life, so maybe he finds a way to keep his sleazy professional life walled off from his only significant relationship. Whether it was inevitable or a self-fulfilling prophecy, Chuck’s skepticism about his brother turns out to be right. But if she had a crystal ball (or a Netflix account with Breaking Bad all queued up), Kim might hedge her bets a little harder. Kim Wexler (Rhea Seehorn)-Jimmy’s romantic and business partner, and the show’s best character-has wagered everything she has, both personally and professionally, on Jimmy’s inherent goodness.

Even with Chuck gone, this is not an abstract question.
